St Martin and St Mary Church of England Primary School

Eco Elves

St Martin and St Mary's has a child from each class to be the spokesperson for ECO issues at the school and the wider community. These pupils are our eco elves, they are passionate about the local area, what they can do to help the environment and how they can educate others.

The school has recently had its second ECO assessment and we have had the Green flag renewed!

This is what Pam Martin the Eco assessor said:

The children can talk enthusiastically but quite naturally about what they have been doing. They are well informed. The board displays are absolutely fantastic and offer clear evidence of curriculum work which has links with the Eco-Schools themes. Well done to everyone and keep up the great work.

The Eco Elves are involved in lots of projects at school, which involve holding assemblies teaching children about how they can save energy, recycle, reuse and reduce. They also go on regular litter picks and update the schools newsletter to inform parents and guardians of the work they are doing and how they can help.

The school recently held an ECO week, where all classes took time to learn about the local environment, their impact on the environment and what can be done to help. The children had a fantastic week and the ECO message of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle was known by all. Each lunch time the ECO Elves went and checked on the classrooms to see if lights were switched off, paper was being used on both sides, paper was being recycled, looking at the amount of waste in the classroom. Each classroom was given a score and by the end of the week Y4D was awarded with the ECO class award.

The children's work from ECO week was then displayed all around school, take a look at our pictures.
